LETTER TO USDA AUTHORITIES RE: DISTEMPER OUTBREAKS

Jan 14, 2003 - To: USDA Authorities

From: Greyhound Protection League

Date: January 13, 2003

ALERT: URGENT ACTION REQUESTED

To Whom It May Concern:

Greyhound Protection League is requesting the immediate cessation of all interstate transport of racing greyhounds in light of the recent multiple outbreaks of distemper throughout the country.

The transport of infected greyhounds across state lines poses a serious risk to both racing greyhounds and the general pet population. Racing officials have stated that the outbreak has been contained. However, new cases within the racing greyhound population continue to surface throughout the country. We fear that not only has the outbreak not been adequately assessed and contained, but that in fact, the outbreak may be spreading.

It is because of the potential for a widespread epidemic that we ask the USDS to call for an immediate halt on all interstate racing greyhound transport.

We have attached recent published media reports that have been tracking this outbreak. We would appreciate your fullest attention in this matter.

Sincerely,

Greyhound Protection League
