Save a Life, Adopt a Greyhound
Greyhound Adoption Campaign Launched in Seattle
SEATTLE – The Greyhound Protection League (GPL) announced today that Seattle has been chosen as the initial site for a national campaign promoting the adoption of “retired” greyhound racing dogs. King County transit ads featuring a greyhound and a toll-free adoption hot line will kick off the campaign. Potential adopters will be provided with contact numbers for the local greyhound rescue organizations servicing the greater Seattle area.
“Non-racing states like Washington are critical to greyhound rescue efforts,” said national GPL spokesperson, Susan Netboy. “Adoption groups in Washington take in greyhounds from as far away as Arizona and Colorado where the over-breeding of racing dogs has long-since saturated the availability of homes in those areas.”
“Greyhounds are gentle, sweet and devoted companions,” said local GPL representative, Scott Younker. “If dog tracks are going to use them to profit off their athletic talents; the dogs deserve a warm bed and a loving home, not a death sentence, after their usefulness is over.” GPL estimates that in recent years nearly 20,000 greyhounds are destroyed annually in spite of nationwide rescue efforts.
Founded in 1991, the Greyhound Protection League is a national non-profit greyhound advocacy organization based in California. In the mid 1990’s GPL volunteers initiated legislation that banned greyhound racing in both Idaho and Washington; the group was instrumental in exposing widespread abuse at the Coeur d’ Alene dog track which closed in the wake of the public scandal.
